The Problem of Innocent Suffering
The problem with innocent suffering is there’s no way to turn it off when it's on
no place to sit when it's time to take a stand, no place to run and hide like would a real man
when the accusing angels come
with their mirrors turned on you so they don’t have to look at themselves.
Sang-froid, you endure it like Jesus did and we all know how that turned out
cause you have no choice when they corner you.
And they are strangely braver when they have numbers
and you are alone
caught empty handed hearing, seeing, speaking no evil they decide you must be suffering
being so innocent
and they move you to their reflections of your fate in their minds
and they move you to their experiences just to deny you what you deserve
and the problem of innocent suffering is: that all you get you ask for, really,
even if it’s not your fault.
Even if it’s not your way they throw mirrors on how they see you and
force you to look at things the way they see them.
It's how they see you is what it's all about...weak, empty, simple in the mind -
Surrender, they say. They are always wanting you to surrender.
Like you are not brave from something secret...
Like you exist only in a figment of their imagination.
(Omigod...You are doomed to their imaginations)
Even though you look for you constantly in the mirror, all you see is what is they see.
The ones who never leave the village always seem to know the most about the world.
Accusing angels, floating at the feet of God, bored out of their minds,
drunk on the holy water,
watching you instead of themselves
