THE LIVES OF THE BROWN SAINTS
and the valley of the shadow turned into a motionless starry sea
pouring into the sky.
I knew I was soaring way too fast but I couldn't stop,
filled with fear but not really,
more relieved it was upwards.
Smiling, but in an unsettling way
and it was the day, it was the day of recounting I was thinking
as they ushered me to the stage
as the lights went down
and it was my turn to say
what will seal my fate
is all I remember
before someone put me in the south line of the north pearly gate
I was a little uncomfortable when she finally put the pen down.
At first it was enchanting in a way
to see her looking at the list (please see my name – spelled TONY)
and then back to me, then at the list again in pretension indecision
which I always seem more comfortable with the decision making process
than the decision, for some reason. but
It is for eternity, after all...
I shall place you in the kitchen of heaven she said, avoiding eye contact,
in the back, with the rest of the brown saints
cussing, smoking, dancing and playing dice
...and tomorrow we will file for your appeal to begin.
It really wouldn't have mattered, you know, what you said -
as here is more important is the skin
to the gods,
than the sin
