the secret of the way things are

shame puts away the wondering mirror
so frustrating not knowing what is wrong
and why what is wrong
can't be made right
walks out of the tent into the village to the square
past the cutting temple elders
through the middle of the path made by the
behind-your-back crowd of rebel mockers
where even the rod of love can't break their need to hurt.
they traded me for a murderer.
they traded me for an adulterer
and then a fornificator and they spit in my face for preaching love.
I am the prophet Zechariah,
I mean Nehemiah,
chosen then scorned by the Lord
who says I should be Jesus next
even though I know how all that ended...

with breath held I walk up to the name-calling list on the wall of the town hall...
and I am there. again.
and I turn to return
through the stares
back to the tent of my aloneliness
with the mirror of pondering shame.

and I hope that in the end I am right
and not just crazy like they say
