the selfish year
(dedicated to maury povich)

He was always wanting.

He was consumed with a selfish want
to know the past
to know about the year before he was here
the sister offers no clues, no longer brags at the quiet dinners
how a mother was born on
the same night as her son.
that the girl she was
was left on the table. left for dead.
says although the nine were tested
many scattered.
still the father isn’t known…

The son grows in the random ways of selfish wants.
He needs what he never had…
product of promiscuity, he is one of the boys
who gets to make up who is his Dad.

Passing the lines of the fathers with their sons
holding the hand of your real father reflected alone
on yet another half-the-life afternoon
lonely hours at the window to the biography library
nine men tested so far.
still unknown. Salvador Dali,
you are not the father.
Mahatma Gandhi. You are not the father.
Martin Luther King.
You are NOT the father.
Jesus Christ, not the father. All left to me…
wondering who he could be. so I can know who to be
still I don’t know who to be

the mother doesn't know what happened during the selfish year.
only the girl knows
and the girl died the night the mother was born.
she thinks it was on a Sunday.
